Detroit, Snow, and Shopping Galore

Yesterday, was an extremely busy day for me. Got up before eight and out of the house before 9 am. I went all the way down to Detroit to pick up a car for a friend.  Roads were just becoming clear after the previous 24 hours of nonstop snowing.  I believe we got about a foot of snow and the trucks were all over the place clearing snow off of the roads. The free ways were clearer and more easily drivable.

After picking up the car for the friend (who would be taking the car on Christmas) I decided to take a detour because my driving buddy needed to finish up some holiday shopping. I’m happy I went along. The Circuit City in this one mall was going out of business and closing down in two days.  Everything was 70-90% off.

I happened to stumble upon a Magellan Maestro GPS that retailed for $299. It was out of the box but in near perfect condition. I got it for $75. Now that’s a sweet buy. Another sweet buy was my Nexxtech Wireless Transmitter and Charger. This thing lets me play my iPod through an FM station on my car radio while charging my iPod (something I’ve been wanting for a while). Regular price? $59.99. How much did I get it for? A mere 18 bucks.

I’m surprised I found both those at all. The store was nearly empty. Everything super good was already gone. I guess people overlooked those two things. My driving buddy got a Mio GPS for $45; its retail price around $150.

I’ve used friends’ GPSs before and really liked them but couldn’t justify spending so much money on them when I could just used mapquest or googlemaps to figure out directions. But coming upon such a sweet buy, I couldn’t help myself. It was too good to turn away from.

I spent the rest of the day helping my buddy find gifts for friends and family. It’s fun when you go shopping to help a friend instead of going shopping to spend money. You don’t feel obliged to spend money or buy anything (even though I did end up buying stuff).

On the flip side of things, more car trouble has headed my way. I believe it’s time for me to part with my beloved (*ahem*) car. She’s been giving me problems left and right. On Thursday, the car decided to die on me in the middle of m running a million errands. I stayed at home all Friday because I was extremely sick. On Saturday, I was out all day getting my friend’s car and holiday shopping but didn’t use my car. I did turn it on to make sure it worked though and it did. But today, it refused to start.

Thank God it’s winter break and I don’t have work to worry about my car working or not. But that’s only for another two weeks. I need to figure out a solution to this problem. I keep getting my car fixed and it keeps falling apart on me. It’s old, and about time to retire, so I keep getting told that I need to get another car- but I can’t afford one at the moment.

I’m sure something will come up soon to solve this problem. If not I might have to take out a loan and buy a used car that’s newer than mine. We’ll see.

Snow, snow, and more snow. It decided to start snowing towards the end of the day yesterday. And apparently it snowed quite a bit throughout the night.  I woke up this morning to find the roads covered in snow again and my drive way completely buried.

Oh well, I guess I’ll just end up staying inside for the rest of the day since my car won’t work and I don’t really urgently need to do anything. Or I just take my friend’s car out for a spin since he won’t be picking it up until Christmas evening.

Let it snow!

So the last day of school for 2008 turns out to be a snow day. It started snowing at 1 am on the 19th and hasn’t stopped yet. One extra day off for winter break- that makes 17 whole days! It’s a break I know the whole school needed- most of all the teachers. It’s gotten super hectic and tiring and so winter break couldn’t come at a better time.

Being holed up in my apartment isn’t too bad actually. First. I know I have over two weeks of free time to go out and do as I please without the constraints of work and college. Second, I’m extremely sick and barely have any voice left in me. So i needed the rest and relaxation. For the first time in months, I got to sleep in. Averaging about six hours a night of sleep, has taken its toll on me and the result? Never getting better.

About a month ago, I got sick and lost my voice and finally started getting better before I was thrown back into sick realm. But that’s not something I’m bothered by. Yes, its annoying to be sick but it’s not going to stop me from getting stuff done.

Other than watching all the snow falling outside and seeing how beautiful all the whiteness is, I am making a huge dent in my reading. Almost done with Artemis Fowl and the Time Paradox, already finished reading The Child Called It, and doing all kinds of stuff with my facebook account and my blog.

Ahh the loveliness of winter break!

MI ::Forget March Forth::

In my last post I had said that it was supposed to snow about 6-9 inches last night. I wasn’t really looking forward to a snow day (I was already missing out on enough college courses- seriously I’m paying an arm and two legs for that I’m not about to want a snow day again) but a snow day would have been nice if it only included the school I work at.

I needed more sleep.

The cold/flu I’ve had for the past three weeks has yet to let up though it has lightened a bit.

Anyhow, I woke up bright and early (Wasn’t very bright actually. It was still dark outside) and checked online at abc12 to see the list of schools closing for the day.

The list was empty. No schools were to be canceled.

I refreshed it just incase it wasn’t up to date. Same results. How could this be if there was inches and inches of snow outside?

I lazily got out of bed and walked over to my glass door. Peaked behind the curtain. There was a extremely thin sheet of snow on top of frozen over water (The previous day was pretty sunny and had melted much of the snow but the ground hadn’t soaked much of the water yet.)

It was going to be slippery business walking to my car without slipping.

Ah another day of work. I really needed that sleep. Oh well. I guess I’d rather have work than have 6 inches of snow to deal with at the moment.

MI ::March Forth::

It’s March.

To me, March symbolizes the beginning of spring.

It snowed the last day of February, but the first two days of March were pretty warm. They were warm to the point that most of the built up snow had melted and the streets were all muddy from the melted snow.

It rained lightly yesterday. But it was still pretty nice. It had hit temperatures in the 50s F. I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure of feeling anything warmer than a 35 F in at least a month.

And yet I go off to my first college course after SPRING break. I was pretty optimistic. The weather was really nice. My class got canceled and so I had to wait and hour and half for my next class to start. Creative Writing.

During those two hours the weather changed completely. It got muggy.

Right when the writing class was about to start my classmates and teacher mentioned that we were to get a harsh storm the next evening and start laughing at my thought that spring was finally here. Nope. Don’t let March deceive you. March is the epitome of WINTER.

Great. (Why did the university give us spring break already then?!)

And now it’s supposed to snow six to nine inches tonight. Wonderful.

I know what’s going to happen. The season’s will just bully spring right out of the way and winter will instantly turn into summer. I can’t stand summer. Much too hot.

There will no longer ever be any more spring or autumn in Michigan.

In Love ::(Take 1)::

I’m in love….

My kindergarten class snowman project. I got a bit carried away I think.

My other boots died on me so I figured what the hell I’ll just get the ones that have been begging me to buy them since I laid eyes on them. Hot topic is awesome.

I’m sure these are super expensive but I can’t help myself. I got my first taste of them at a friend’s house. And then a few weeks later someone gave me a whole box of them. Two mega bags in each box. I still haven’t finished the first bag. But I must say that’s one of the best chocolates I’ve ever had.

If you want to bribe me, you know what to use as bait. Enough said.

Not very proud of this one, I must say. A waste of good money but I can’t seem to stop.

Love it.

Snow is beautiful. At least I think so. But for some reason I don’t think I can last around it for too long. It’s pretty to visit but not to live in. I guess I’m just a Cali girl to the core.

(Those are the loves in my life so far. I’ll keep updating it whenever the list grows and whenever I remember things that have become such a major part of my life that I don’t notice anymore. They are in no specific order.)

MI ::School-less::

Two nights ago it snowed between 8 and 12 inches with an accumulation of 5 to 8 inches.  I had no idea of this until I stepped outside my basement studio apartment because I don’t have any windows in my place and the glass door has blinds concealing my little niche in darkness. So Sunday I walk out at 3 in the afternoon to find that I was almost snowed in. There was at least four inches of snow I had to push away just to open my door. And of course I wasn’t dressed for the snow with my sneakers on.backyard

I stepped outside and my foot sunk into the snow to the point where I couldn’t see it. The weather wasn’t that cold. At least it didn’t feel like it because there was no wind. But it was below 25 F. My car was under a huge pile of snow and my driveway was unrecognizable. It took me five minutes to get my car out of the driveway because of all the snow and my car kept getting stuck. outside my boss's house

Of course soccer was canceled. Which was a major bummer. I was really looking forward to it. I didn’t think the weather was that bad personally. Yeah there was still tons of snow all over the roads because the plowers hadn’t gotten to them yet but still. It wasn’t that bad! But that’s only my opinion since this is my first year living anywhere with this much snow.It’s funny how much I, a Cali girl, have no clue when it comes to the snow.Driving back from canceled soccer

So soccer is canceled.

I decide to go hang out at my boss’s house. Being around them is so fun. I arrive and the kids are playing outside and when they see me they run over and shower me with hugs and questions of what I was doing coming and why I hadn’t come for a couple of days and the like.outside boss's house

I ended up baby sitting the kids while the parents went out to watch I Am Legend. I got to watch Underworld Evolution for the millionth time. When the parents finally got back it was after ten at night and I was happily informed that there would be no school the next day (today; monday) and hence no work for me or my boss. taken while driving

I guess the weather was bad enough for the public schools to take off so we took off as well. Funny thing is we just have Tuesday left and then it’s winter break. It would be a bummer if we have to show up tomorrow. I’m hoping we get a really bad snowstorm tonight or something and then we’d be able to take tomorrow off as well. That would be awesome.more snow
